Get the Sustainable Look: Crystal Renn

Recently, I spotted Crystal Renn on the Toronto Fashion Week runway and was thrilled to see that they’d included the gorgeous size 12 model. She’s a positive role model for women and girls, the author of the empowering book “Hungry”, and a stunning beauty with good taste in fashion.

Her classic white blouse paired with a flouncy black skirt, decorative earrings, a belt to cinch in the waist, and black heels will suit any woman’s shape.

To make the look sustainably yours, put together these pieces:

Zoica Matei’s mission is to create sustainable pieces made in the USA by well-paid workers using natural colours and hydrogen peroxide to bleach white shirts because it is more eco-friendly. Matei’s Alba blouse with detachable sash and French cuffs will serve beautifully in a woman’s wardrobe:

The Courier Skirt by Nau is made from recycled polyester fabric. To add to its sustainability, this water-repellent skirt can be recycled into polyester fibres when you’re through with it:

Moo Shoes Vegan shoe line is 100% Cruelty Free. That means there are absolutely no animal products in this gorgeous pair of heels by Novacas (and they’re inexpensive at a sale price of $29.99!). See shoes here:

The eco-clutch for Simply Soles is made from recycled materials and the pretty flower pin is detachable if you want to change it up:

When it came time to find a sustainable version of Crystal’s pretty waist-defining belt, I stumbled upon an article describing how to “Turn Your Old Leggings Into a Trendy Belt” and thought it couldn’t be any more perfect. You can find full instructions on Planet Green.

For earrings that stand up and get noticed, I like the Moonrise Jewelry Neblina Earrings. They’re touted as Fair Trade Gems made from natural and untreated gemstones that are mined by hand in a way that causes minimal damage to their natural environment and put together in a factory with fair working conditions:

Lastly, add a simple necklace and a pop of color in your lipstick to complete this classic look.

How Do You Grab Land? The recent phenomenon of aggressive land takeovers, also known as land grabs, has resulted in the taking of enormous portions of land throughout Africa. On October 3, 2011, the Obama administration said it was moving forward with oil-drilling leases off the coast of Alaska issued by the Bush administration in 2008. • Association of Black Women Historians Blasts ‘The Help’
Movie Poster for ‘The Help.” Although just released on August 10, “The Help,” a film adapted from Kathryn Stockett’s novel, has already run aground of racism charges by the Association of Black Women Historians (ABWH). In its formal statement to moviegoers, the Association of Black Women Historians (ABWH) admonishes  the film for “widespread stereotyping” of […]
  • Single Mothers a Public Health Problem? Depends on Who is Asking the Question
“Unwed mothers suffer long-term health woes,” read the headline in the Los Angeles Times on June 2. I felt myself cringe as I took it in, not just because of the significance of this statement, but also because of the use of the term “unwed mother.” After reading the full article, my initial cringe turned […]
  • How the English Empire Accidentally Created the Wedding Industry
We can thank the British for many things: the colonization of much of the world, not passing on their dentistry or cooking skills, our accents, the postage stamp, Mr. Bean, the pay toilet and gravity, just to name a few. But one thing we have never given them credit for is creating the wedding industry. […]
  • Goodbye Hymen, Hello Hyphen!
Each generation has their heated issue when it comes to marriage. Once upon a time, it was imperative to maintain the virtue and innocence of a young woman (i.e.: the presence of her hymen) on her wedding night.
