Wall Street dominates the national news. Is there any limit to the avarice? Not much surprises us anymore. We cannot and should not allow ourselves to be jaded into accepting this level of corruption, now or in the future. What can we do about it? How can individual citizens support Congressional reform efforts and force Wall Street and K Street interests to back down?
The Coffee Party Is Brewing Up Support for Financial Reform
By Elizabeth Maginnis
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010 CONDUCIVE
The Coffee Party USA is urging its members to mobilize and organize into discussion groups and public protests to call attention to voter discontent over the actions of tone deaf politicians and the lobbyists who influence them. According to the Coffee Party website, Wall Street lobbyists spend $1,000,000 per Senator to keep financial reform from ever becoming reality.
The Coffee Party is also encouraging its members to join forces with Americans for Financial Reform, a coalition of national and state organizations that support change to our financial system. Its growing membership roster includes such influential groups as the AARP, Common Cause and the NAACP and other consumer, labor, business, retiree, investor, community and civil rights organizations. Together, these groups are mobilizing their own members to raise their voices against the free-wheeling dealings of Wall Street through phone banks, marches and rallies. Check them out.
You can also check out the website for Move Your Money to see whether your bank has engaged in the risky behavior responsible for bringing our economy to the brink. If it has, take your business elsewhere! And be sure to let your bank know why you’re leaving.
The Coffee Party strongly urges its members to humanize the need for financial reform with phone calls or visits to their Senators’ offices to convey their real-life stories of foreclosures or small business loan denials. Our economy will not turn around unless and until people stop losing their jobs and their homes and businesses become productive once again.
