Eco-Trend Alert

JULY/AUGUST 2009 CONDUCIVE
When it comes to womenswear, variety could not be more obvious. Womenswear this fall echoed restyling, variety, merged old with new, and showed nature-like qualities. Here are five main womenswear trends for fall 2009:
Recycle & Reuse
This is one of the most prominent trends. This look is inspired by 80s silhouettes, old childhood garments, vintage backwards dresses, that old prom number tucked somewhere in the back of the closet, and hand-me-downs. Jackets slouch with their large bulky shoulders or are very fitted and kiddie-looking. Dresses come sleek in the front with detailed backs or are reminiscent of prom night, but dressed down for a less formal look. Skirts have a pencil silhouette as well as a more oversized hand-me-down spin.
How to make it worker-friendly, eco-friendly, and/or animal-friendly
Labels and brands such as Peligrosa, deux fm, and Stella McCartney present this trend. Peligrosa offers organic, recycled, and sustainable clothing. Stella McCartney offers animal-friendly, organic, and eco-friendly clothing. Deux fm gives the consumer sustainable options and claims fair labor manufacturing. Shop Peligrosa at Peligrosaknits.com and Stella McCartney at StellaMcCartney.com. Log onto deuxfm.com for a list of stores where deux fm is sold.
Designers responded to both consumers wanting more for their buck and possibly the Transformers movie when they created shape-shifting garments. Coats showed off this trend by buttons with multiple buttonholes and reversible flaps.

Designer Lara Miller offers this trend in more sustainable fabrics such as bamboo. Log onto LaraMiller.net for a list of stores selling Lara Miller clothing.
Bare Minimum
This look exemplifies minimalism in its sleek simplicity. Coats are rectangular, tops are square, and there is little shape to the garments.

Jagged Edge
This style uses geometric shapes and sharp angles. Coats, power dresses and mid-calf a-line skirts embody this look.

Echoing the curvature of bugs such as beetles and ladybugs, this look uses large curves and accentuates the lower half of the body. Rounded coats with wing shaped sleeves help merge the shape of nature with contemporary style.
